Samantha Louise & Skyler Floe
NYC based artists Samantha Louise (vocalist) and Skyler Floe (trumpet) are joined by Auckland’s own Kevin Field, Mostyn Cole, and Andy Keegan for an evening of original music and tunes from the Great American Songbook. Skyler and Samantha are solo artists that share many musical influences and enjoy collaborating on arrangements that feature tight vocal/trumpet duets. Samantha penned lyrics for and is the featured vocalist on the title track of Skyler’s newest album Abstraction.
Samantha Louise grew up in Pelorus, New Zealand, surrounded by a large family of music lovers. After moving to the United States she earned her Bachelor of Music (2015) from Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle, WA, studying with Johnaye Kendrick (of säje). At that time, she was honored to have an original composition performed by members of the Seattle Philharmonic. She later earned her Master of Music in Studio Music and Jazz (2017) from the University of Miami. Whilst studying with Dr. Kate Reid at Frost School of Music, Samantha was the featured vocalist for the XJB big-band and was also hired to sing back-ups for two-time Grammy Award winner Jon Secada. Samantha is now a New York City based vocalist where she performs works from the Great American Songbook and composes contemporary music inspired by both Black American Music theory as well as popular music trends.
Skyler Floe was born and raised north of Seattle in Washington, USA, and began playing trumpet at age 10. At 18 years old, Skyler was a participant in the Essentially Ellington Jazz Festival, where Wynton Marsalis awarded him the Outstanding Trumpet Soloist Award. Skyler earned his undergraduate degrees in both classical performance and music education at Central Washington University (2016). Following this, Skyler spent two years studying at the Institute of Jazz in Graz, Austria, under the tutelage of Jim Rotondi. Finally, he completed his MM in Jazz Studies at Indiana University while also holding a position as an associate instructor at Indiana University's Jacobs School of Music. In 2019, Skyler was one of five trumpet players selected to compete in the prestigious Carmine Caruso International Jazz Trumpet Competition, and he now resides in NYC as an active freelancing trumpet player. In October of 2021, Skyler released his album Abstraction which features all original compositions.
