Steve Barry "Green Thumbs"
CJC-favourite pianist Steve Barry returns with a brand funky organ trio album, paying homage to the 60’s & 70’s greats of the era, while updating the sound for the 21st Century.
Green Thumbs sprouted during Sydney’s 2020 Covid lockdown after a long time in gestation and unsuccessful attempts to grow passionfruit on an inner city balcony. Rooted in the blues with a healthy fertilisation of modern jazz, Green Thumbs speaks to the photosynthetic power of live music and features hat tips to 70s Cop Shows, ghost stories, and master organists Larry Goldings, Jack McDuff, Jimmy McGriff and Dr Lonnie Smith.
Dr Steve Barry is a pianist, composer and improviser of jazz and contemporary classical music and a lecturer at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. Winner of the 2021 APRA Professional Development Award for Jazz, Barry’s recent projects include a work for Sydney new music group Ensemble Offspring, tours of Vietnam and Japan and a suite of compositions and free improvisations for solo piano.
He is joined by locals Michael Howell, Ron Samsom, and a special guest on tenor saxophone.
