Neil Watson’s Zen Dogs
Tāmaki Makaurau guitarist, Neil Watson returns to CJC along with Chris O’Connor and Chip Matthews to present the new ‘Zen Dogs’ power trio.
These three have agreed that serving up an organic vibe of rag-tag sounds and ideas, knitted together in a collective state of being is the order of the day. They intend to seamlessly cover a spectrum of sonics, swallow genres whole and defy the norms of jazz. Their repertoire will include some newly penned and unheard originals with an eclectic mix of what Neil calls his ‘new standards’.
Although these three musicians have an intertwining and long history of working with each other in all manner of ensembles and musical situations over the years, this ‘power trio’ format is relatively new and they are excited to share their collective spirit with you.
The music of the Zen Dogs is steeped in musical history, drawing influences from a wide array of styles and cohesively fusing them together into a unique approach and sound.
They will keep you on your toes journeying through the Deep South of psychedelic blues, swinging by New Orleans, passing through Mid-west country-esque soundscapes and rendezvousing at kitsch renditions of old favorites.
These are to name a few of the musical destinations the Zen Dogs will traverse.
