Russ Spiegel (USA)

  • Anthology 375 Karangahape Road Auckland, Auckland, 1010 New Zealand (map)

Russ Spiegel

Groovy, swinging, and sophisticated at the same time, the music of versatile guitarist and composer Russ Spiegel (USA) hits all the right notes. Covering a wide variety of styles from hard-swinging modern and post-modern jazz to rock, blues, funk, Latin, and more, listeners will get to hear Russ’s accessible and engaging original music.

For his only local appearance Russ will be leading a septet featuring an all-star cast of Auckland’s finest musicians: Finn Scholes-trumpet, Callum Passells-alto sax, Roger Manins-tenor sax, Connor McAneny-piano, Cameron McArthur-bass, and Daniel Waterston-drums.

Russ received his undergraduate degree in philosophy from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and studied music at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. He then spent over a decade living and performing in Europe before moving to be part of the jazz scene in New York City.

Russ earned his master’s degree in jazz performance from the City College of New York and his doctorate in Jazz Composition at the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami as a Henry Mancini Institute Fellow. He has released several CDs, writes, and arranges for big band ensembles, scores music for film, and regularly performs concerts and leads masterclasses and workshops around the world. Russ currently teaches at Florida International University and Miami Dade College in Miami, Florida.

Channeling the spirited energy of hard bop with the progressive aesthetics of rock music, Spiegel carves out his own niche in the contemporary jazz scene.
