Sean Coffin’s Zoning Laws
Boston-born tenor saxophonist Sean Coffin has been a mainstay in the Australian jazz scene for almost four decades.
Since graduating at Berklee College of Music (B.Mus) and Manhattan School of Music (M.Mus), where over a decade in Boston and New York he absorbed the teaching of the greatest jazz exponents in Joe Viola, Bill Pierce, Hal Crook, Ed Tomassi, Bob Mintzer and George Garzone, Sean has made Australia home.
Sean has been back in Sydney since 2000, where he teaches at Sydney Conservatorium, and has composed for and led bands such as The Coffin Brothers, scQUINT, Sean Coffin Sextet, Third Wheel, Intrionsic, Wield and now Zoning Laws.
The Zoning Laws band are derived from Sean’s new improvising method called ‘Flow Zoning,’ which has been the impetus, musical inspiration and new sound, creating new compositions and innovative improvisations, and is the subject of his soon to be submitted PhD.
His 2023 tour, taking this music to SIMA in Sydney and Jazzlab in Melbourne, includes a long-overdue return to CJC in Auckland, where Sean will be joined by young-gun locals Joe Kaptein, Wil Goodinson and Ben Frater, in a night that is the culmination of years of dedication, and fun for all.
