Abi Lee

Abi Lee is an up-and-coming pianist, composer, and improviser based in Naarm/Melbourne. Born of Korean parents, she grew up in Auckland, New Zealand. Abi has relocated to Melbourne, drawn by her love of Australian Jazz.

Since the age of 5, her love for piano and music had always been a driving force for her, which led her to study at the Victorian College of the Arts under Andrea Keller, Brett Williams, Barney McAll and other notable musicians in Melbourne.

Abi has been awarded several scholarships and awards such as Will Poskitt Piano Scholarship, Graham Coyle Award and Lady Turner Prize and was a recipient of the Most Outstanding Pianist at the New Zealand School of Music Jazz Project.

With a broad focus on improvisation, Abi’s compositions are mostly inspired by the people and episodes in her life, often dedicating a song to a certain person or anything that brings her joy.

Abi’s originals perfectly represent her sense of musicality and her love of music influenced by significant musicians such as Paul Bley, Andrea Keller, Paul Motian, and Bill Frisell.

The night will be filled with her storytelling tunes with a hint of free improvisation joined by Lukas Fritsch (sax), Wil Goodinson (bass), and Jono Sawyer (drums).
