Duncan Haynes Trio
Since returning to New Zealand in late 2020, pianist Duncan Haynes has quickly become one of the most sought-out players on the Wellington scene.
20 years overseas in London, Lima & Paris, have seen him collaborate with a wide range of top musicians from genres as varied as world music, rock and blues and avant-garde jazz.
While living in Peru he performed with a number of world-class artists including Susana Baca, Eva Ayllon and Andres Prado, and in Paris he established the world music/jazz crossover group Cuarteto Imaginario in 2017.
His string arrangements adorn Bic Runga’s multi platinum selling albums Drive (1997) and Beautiful Collision (2002).
The Duncan Haynes Trio featuring the talents of Umar Zakaria on bass and Mark Lockett on drums perform Duncan’s original compositions .
As one reviewer recently put it: “original, musically ingenious and unfailingly engaging contemporary jazz performed with spontaneity, cool-headed virtuosity, improvisational flair and a sense of humour. This is what it’s all about if you ask me – these guys are the real deal and this honestly was the best night of live jazz I have seen in god knows how long!”
