NewBop Quintet
The 1950’s and 60’s was the era of the greats like Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Art Blakey, Horace Silver, Cannonball Adderly, Thelonious Monk, Sonny Rollins. It’s when the music known as BeBop evolved into HardBop.
In 2019 lover and supporter of Jazz David Innes took a philanthropic step and proposed the idea of an Auckland based HardBop tribute band and in partnership with recording industry icon Terence O’Neill-Joyce assembled The NewBop Quintet. The band brings together Pete France, Mike Booth, Kevin field, Franks Gibson Jr, and Wil Goodinson.
NewBop Quintet shines a fresh light on the key aspects of Hard Bop – a close link with the blues, a strong rhythmical presence, and strong melody lines. The NewBop Quintet revisits the Hard Bop ethos with stunning original tunes and a familiar yet fresh take on standards like So What and Straight No Chaser.
They celebrate the release of their debut album at CJC.
