Bradley, Hirst & Manins: Shark Variations (Aus/NZ)

  • Anthology 375 Karangahape Road Auckland, Auckland, 1010 New Zealand (map)

Dynamic drummer Reuben Bradley returns to NZ, and reunites with Brett Hirst and Roger Manins, to recapture their 2016 album, Shark Variations.

Shark Variations, recorded at the end of a nationwide tour in 2016, features Roger Manins on Tenor Saxophone and Double Bassist Brett Hirst.

This recording captures the energy and musical connection that these fine Australasian players deliver live. Space and intensity share the spotlight on this album, and it is our pleasure to present the music in New Zealand again this October.

“Shark Variations is preoccupied with musical expression and innovations…a vibrant energy as themes and ideas are lovingly explored.” Otago Daily Times

“…a more than usually intense tour de force by these three juggernauts of NZ jazz.” nzmusician.co.nz

Reuben Bradley has played drums with Taylor Eigsti, Matt Penman, David Friesen and Mike Nock, as well as many notable New Zealand jazz musicians and pop artists. As a band leader, Reuben has released four albums - Resonator (2010) - winner of the Tui award for Jazz Album of the Year 2010/2011, Mantis: The Music of Drew Menzies (2013) - featuring the NZ String Quartet, Cthulhu Rising (2015) - recorded in NYC and now Shark Variations (2017) - featuring Brett Hirst and Roger Manins.

Shark Variations was released in June 2017 at the Wellington International Jazz Festival, the day before Reuben moved to Australia. This project has been waiting in the wings ever since, now Reuben has the chance to bring the music to Auckland and Hamilton for the first time.

Residing in Sydney since 1998, Brett Hirst has many performance and recording credits including: Mike Nock, Mark Isaacs, Sandy Evans, Phil Slater, Matt McMahon, James Muller, James Morrison, Lior, Katie Noonan, Vince Jones, James Greening, Greg Osby, Sheila Jordan, Sean Wayland and many more.

Roger Manins is, of course, familiar to CJC audiences & one of the leading Jazz saxophonists in the Southern Hemisphere. His playing is rooted in the jazz tradition and described as ‘that rarest of musician that manages to effortlessly marry tradition and individuality, swinging hard-bop with feisty modernism, with a sound that can once charm and excite’.

In 2002 Roger won the Wangaratta Australian Jazz awards on Saxophone, and in 2012 was awarded a IJJA ‘Jazz Hero’ award for services to the community.
