The Gristle of Knuckles: Eve de Castro-Robinson

  • Anthology 375 Karangahape Road Auckland, Auckland, 1010 New Zealand (map)

Live performance of the award-winning album The Gristle of Knuckles by composer Eve de Castro-Robinson.

The Gristle of Knuckles performers were handpicked by Eve from the jazz, pop and classical scene, as players with musical charisma and a powerful ability to transform and energise her music.

The CD won her Best Classical Artist/Te Kaipuoro Inamata Toa at the 2018 Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards and has drawn acclaim from critics and fellow musicians. Embarking on a project involving a collaborative method of working has proved successful for renowned composer Associate Professor Eve de Castro-Robinson.

The award recognises her recent album The Gristle of Knuckles, which features nine selected musicians including Don McGlashan, Delaney Davidson, Nathan Haines, and Kevin Field reimagining a collection of de Castro-Robinson's solo works.

The album, made with Steve Garden of Rattle Records, features the composer herself playing a toy piano, kalimba and music box on the final, two minute track.

“It opened up a way of working that was highly collaborative, not just a straight reading of my detailed scores, which has been the norm for my previous solo recordings,” says de Castro-Robinson. “Steve and I handpicked the musicians together, and it was an utter pleasure to work with such a wide spectrum of New Zealand’s best, hearing their various interpretations and improvisations.”

The Gristle of Knuckles also won an Auckland Arts Festival Fringe Award 2018 for Best Music.
