This book of music comes from Bobby Vidal's 'Mambo Macoco' which had a residency on NYC's East Side for many years at the Saint Marks Bar. Crayford spent 3 years with the band and often brings Bobby's charts out to play the great canon of Latin music particular to Mambo Macoco. They play compositions by Vidal, Mario Bauza, Claire Fischer, Jay Collins, Crayford and others. 'This was a great band and a lot of really great players came out of it'. Its Be Bop mixed with Puerto Rican and Cuban music and was a real soundtrack to life on the East Side. Some of the most joyful music I have ever played in my life and its all from that time in the 90's before Giuliani changed it all and swept the streets clean of all that interesting shit.
Jonathan Crayford is perhaps New Zealand’s most exciting export to the world of music. This prolific composer, performer and pianist spent 20 years honing his craft in New York, before returning to NZ in the naughties to rock the music scene. Crayford has most recently been living in Paris and Spain, writing a film/opera and recording two albums of solo piano music in Spain and a trio album in New York.
Acclaimed as a highly original compositional talent, pianist Jonathan Crayford has been responsible for many film soundtracks, albums, and bands. As a sideman he has worked with Kurt Rosenwinkel, David Binney, David Murray, Groove Collective, Amp Fiddler, Questlove, Mambo Macoco, Bruno Lawrence and many others.
Miguel Fuentes is a master percussionist. He was with George Benson, Grover Washington, Patti LaBelle - but that doesn't really say anything relatively speaking. His knowledge of folkloric music is as deep as it gets. A master from Puerto Rico. It's an honour to play with such a deep cat.
Nathan Haines and I have a long association that goes way back and thats true for him and Miguel also. He also needs no introduction. Nathan spent a lot of time in NY when Macoco was playing and he knows the book. This is going to be a great gig.
